Ben Brooks Talks Debut Album, Cooking, and More in Exclusive Interview

Thank you for talking with us Ben. When and how did your passion for music start? Your welcome, thanks for having me. My Dad introduced me to a lot of cool music when I was really young. He listened to a lot of rock and roll from the 60's and 70's and would always be telling me about each band: who sang, who played what on each song. Bands like: The Allman Brothers, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin, Roy Orbison, The Beatles. I really admired all those guys and I wanted to be just like them. Then I got a guitar for my twelfth birthday and started playing with my friend down the street and I never stopped.

What impact do you want your music to have on this chaotic world of ours? I would just like my music to make people feel good or feel something long enough to forget about all the negative. I think music has a very positive effect on the human psyche. It always makes me feel better and I want my music to do the same for other people.

Favorite lyric/song from your new album, Jean on Jean. Probably “She won’t fall and I can’t stand”. I think that’s one of my best written songs and that line pretty much sums up my dating life.

What’s a song you may have written ‘just for you,’ but has had a lot of response from listeners? "Tearing it Apart." I didn’t think it was that great of a song at first and I was a little shy about recording it. My producer Scotty told me it was a good one and encouraged me to finish it. I’m so glad I did now and people seem to really like that one.

What would eight-year old Ben say to you now about your life and career? How come you’re not a rock star yet?

Was there ever music playing in the kitchen growing up? I remember we had a Bose Wave radio and my Mom would be listening to Gospel or I would turn it on the local rock station, 95.1 The Fox. My parents still have it in their kitchen.

Do you cook as much as you can when off the road or do you prefer eating out? I do like to cook when I can.

Southerners know good cookin’. What's your favorite family recipe? I love my Grandmom’s pimento cheese recipe. You can’t find any in the grocery store that’s even half as good as hers. I make it all the time.

Is there anywhere you have wanted to travel or a restaurant you have always wanted to dine in that you have not yet? Or somewhere you cannot wait to get back to? I’ve always wanted to spend a month or more traveling around Europe starting in the UK and just branching out from there. France, Spain, Italy etc. Soaking up as much of the local culture as possible.

What kitchen appliance do you use every day? Coffee maker. I love drinking coffee first thing in the morning. Usually black.

What's your favorite fast food chain? I really like Whataburger. I think their fries are perfect and the burgers are great.

What’s on your pizza? I like all the toppings on my pizza, so I usually get a supreme.

Aside from your passion for food and music, what’s the one thing that really keeps you ticking? I really like getting together and hanging out with my friends but, we usually end up going to a show or a cool restaurant.

Finally, if you could be sponsored by one food/drink brand who would it be and why? Budweiser. I don’t think there is anything more refreshing than an ice cold Budweiser in the bottle. And I like the label a lot.
