Nashville-based Rebecca and Megan Lovell, make up the GRAMMY® Award-nominated sister-duo, Larkin Poe. Their forthcoming album,SELF MADE MAN, will be released Friday, June 12 via the band’s own Tricki-Woo Records. We talked with the sisters about the new album and all things Nashville. Congratulations on your new album, Self Made Man! Was this born in Nashville or on the road? ML: “Leading into the recording process for ‘Self Made Man’, we toured intensely for two years in support of our Grammy-nominated album ‘Venom & Faith’. After so much time on the road, it was a luxury to be able to take a couple of months at home in Nashville to reflect on all our touring experiences and to write and record ‘Self Made Man’. Channeling all that live energy directly into this new album was supremely cathartic.”
Are there any songs that didn’t make the album that you now wish you included? RL: “As an artist, I don’t think it’s healthy to keep your eyes on the rearview mirror - I’m super proud of this album and it’s probably my favorite album that we’ve made to date! I don’t know that I’d change anything about it.”
Favorite lyric/song from this album. RL: “One of my favorite songs on the album would have to be “Back Down South”! I co-wrote the song with my husband, Tyler Bryant, and I think that there are some really cool lyrical moments we hit on together: “The trees down in Georgia grow as tall as a cross, where little Richard was singing, where rock n roll learned to walk”.”
What do you like about self producing your albums? ML: “We’re extreme do-it-youselfers, so self-producing our albums has gone hand in hand with the fiercely independent ethos of our band. We love the creative freedom that self-producing has allowed us; we’ve given ourselves time and space to chase after creative ideas in the studio and I think that that has really changed the shape and sound of our albums in a positive way.”
Due to the pandemic there is not a lot, if any, touring right now. What will you be doing to support the new album this year? RL: “In recent weeks, we’ve definitely had to think outside the box and get creative in the ways that we have continued to connect with our fans. We’ve been investing a lot more time into social media and it’s been super fun - lots of live stream shows, a lot more videos for our YouTube channel, etc, etc. As a human, you’ve just gotta roll with the punches that the universe throws.”
What excites you most about the Nashville music scene right now? ML: “I love how musically diverse Nashville has become; during non-Corona times, there are countless concerts you can attend every night of the week of every genre! That perpetual explosion of creative is really exciting and inspiring to be around.”
As sisters, what is it like to work together ALL the time? RL: “In our early-twenties we definitely hit some rough patches - but we’ve always been best friends and have invested a lot of energy into strengthening our relationship as sisters over the years. Being in a band with a sibling is a big responsibility but, if you acknowledge that fact, you can really thrive together.”
Who is the bigger foodie in the band? ML: “Probably our drummer, Kevin McGowan. One time we pulled off at a rest stop in the UK and he managed to find himself a fancy cheese tray with high end crackers… Dude knows how to eat.”
Being a Nashvillian, what are some of your favorite dishes and where are the best places to find them? RL: “We love Mexican food. We’ve gotta give a shoutout to Baja Burrito. It’s an institution.”

ML: “If brains were leather, he wouldn't have enough to saddle a junebug…”
Southerners know good cookin’. What's your favorite family recipe? RL: “We’ve got a killer cornbread recipe that we’ve made vegan - it’s killer.”
