New Music Friday Featuring Matt Koerner

Thank you for talking with us Matt. How did your passion for music come about? Many different places...sitting in the back seat of my parents car growing up listening to early Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Tracy Lawrence. Also, my cousin played Free Bird on guitar at a family get together when he was 17 (I was 13) and that inspired me to learn how to play guitar. (I still can’t play Free Bird)

Where did you grow up and how did that influence your style of music? I grew up in Southern California and it has influenced my music tremendously. My music I hope is fun, feels good, laid back and makes people feel great when they listen to it. It also influenced me to NOT write about southern boy/cowboy/good ole boy type stuff because I didn’t grow up that way. If I did write songs about that then the real cowboys would see right through me.

Best piece of advice about music career? Enjoy the process!!!!

What original recorded song means the most to you and why? “Stayed Alive in 45” it’s a song about the true story of my grandfather who fought in world war 2. That song means the world to me for the obvious personal reasons but also because of the response it gets from fans when I play it live. It reminds people of their own stories of their loved ones who fought for this country.

When/where do you do your best writing? You never know when or where inspiration will hit you. Someone told me once, “song ideas float in front of your eyes on a cloud and if you don’t reach out and grab them (I.e. write them down) they are gone forever.” Haha I have a “song ideas” note in my phone. Also, I wrote “Stayed Alive In 45” at 3 in the morning one night when I couldn’t sleep so I don’t think there is a perfect time to write. Or maybe there is...when everyone’s sleeping!

Favorite music to listen to while you cook? Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Tim McGraw!

Favorite food that comes in a can? Refried Beans (add cream) AND mandarin oranges (not together)

Home cooked meal or go out to eat? Home cooked!!!! Dad found a guy on YouTube (Kent Rollins) and he has been cooking a lot of his stuff. DELISH!

Favorite food on the road? Those cheese and berry gas station danishes

Finally, if you could be sponsored by one food/drink brand who would it be and why?Gatorade because I love sports, I can drink it when I’m working out or playing music AND I can drink it any time day or night. Close second, Jack Daniels. I can also drink that anytime day or night!
